Noyers-sur-Serein, France

Filed under: General — Nick @ 11:48 am

Noyers-sur-Serein is considered as one of the most beautiful villages of France and it is easy to see why. The village contains half-timbered houses, ashlars, pillars and pinnacles with a lot of lanes and small squares made of chalky and granitic pavements. The place de la Petite-Étape-aux-Vins and place de l’Hôtel-de-Ville are exceptional examples of this. Wood carvings dominate building decoration and all are well maintained. Even the local birdlife are given a home in the timber forecourts of some housing using sheets of canvas (although this is mainly to prevent bird droppings littering the area!):

The village is bordered by the River Serein and there are ancient wash buildings which are magnificent to visit:

There are towers surrounded by the river Serein loops:

All of this is remarkably free of tourists unlike Chablis. It is very surprising that the village only has a population of 800. The village is stunning and well worth a visit.
